Sólfarið - The Sun Voyager

History of the Sun Voyager
The concept of Sólfarið was born in 1986, when artist Jón Gunnar Árnason entered a competition celebrating Reykjavík’s 200th anniversary. His vision of a dreamboat resonated deeply with Icelanders, reflecting the nation’s history of seafaring, discovery, and endurance.
Árnason passed away before the sculpture’s completion, but his vision was carried out according to his design. The final installation took place on August 18, 1990. Since then, Sólfarið has become one of Iceland’s most beloved modern artworks and an enduring symbol of optimism and connection between humans, nature, and the elements.
